Which is faster?

Why are so many boats today built with gennaker and gennaker pole? Is a gennaker faster than a spinnaker? Or is it simply easier to handle? The results of the Baltic Sprint Cup 2008 showed an ambivalent picture: From three Rogers 46, identical in construction, which took the first three places in the ranking, the one equipped with a spinnaker called "Danebury" was superior to the two sister ships under gennaker and won the race even on corrected time.

Is it just the rating advantage of the gennaker? Or is a gennaker maybe just a sail for light-weighed yachts or dinghies? Or is the skiff sail just a trend?

Sail makers and designers explain the characteristics as well as the influence on the rating.
