One World, One Rule!

The offshore racing scene in Northern Europe is acting primarily at regional level. ORC and IRC rating systems are competing in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. Denmark, Norway and Sweden are dealing with their own rating systems such as Dansk HandiCap, LYS and SRS. Racing your boat in all northern countries requires up to five rating certificates - it is not surprising that there is very little international exchance between northern european racers.

Differences in measurement systems

In the beginning, there will be an introduction to the different measurement systems in Northern Europe: ORC, IRC, Dansk Handicap and SRS, their present spread and trends. Following, experienced measurers will explain the substantial criteria and differences. In the end, there will be the opportunity to ask questions and express demands to the panel. The panel will be staffed with the following specialists (current listing):

- Torsten Conradi (GER)

- John Corby (GBR)

- Mark Mills (IRL)

- Simon Rogers (GBR)

- Malcolm Runnalls (AUS)

- Kay-Enno Brink (GER)

- Dobb Davis (USA)

Moderation: Mike Castania (AUS)

Make use of this opportunity to express your opinion!

Yacht owners will be able to directly influence the development by participating in the discussion panels. At the first Yacht forum held back in February 2010, more than 200 yacht owners expressed their demand for a simplified, transparent global rating system from IRC and ORC. Now, in a joint press release two weeks ago at hanseboot International Boat Show Hamburg, ORC and IRC announced their engagement in future co-operation in order to unite the best of both formulas.

A short survey has been created to optimize the results of these discussions, please take a minute to answer the questions (in english): (download PDF >> , download word-dokument >> ).

"It is the intention of the Forum to involve owners and yachtsmen with the technical and rule developements", says Volker Andreae, chairman of the German Offshore Owners Association. "After each discussion, the participants can show approval or denial openly by raising their hands." The results will be published on the internet, and also sent as an open letter to the associations.
